27 Boxes is not a new concept – but I’m usually pretty late to jumping on trains. And this little gem was no different.
We’ve been wanting to visit it for a while now, but other things have always gotten in the way. Finally though, this weekend it was checked off the to do list! And I am really glad I got to see what it was all about.
If you’re not familiar with what 27 Boxes is – basically it’s like a shopping centre type of thing, but it’s made completely out of shipping containers. Based in Melville, the absolute heart of creativity, art and boldness in Joburg, 27 Boxes is a huge attraction for not only visitors, but locals as well (exhibit A).
There are many different shops – from food and drinks, to clothing, jewellery and homeware. The stuff is very different though, most of it has a distinct bohemian feel, which is really refreshing and interesting.
We browsed around and were intrigued by the interesting attention to detail that every shop had.
My favourite was The Countess, where we stopped to have a drink. The decor in this restaurant was so beautiful and picturesque!
There are definitely a lot of hidden gems within these shops, and if you’re looking for something different, I highly recommend 27 Boxes. It was such a lovely way to spend an afternoon!
