Baggy jeans, who dis?
I can’t say I ever thought I’d be joining the baggy jeans trend, but here I am! Me, a petite woman who typically sticks to skinny jeans and tight trousers because that’s what I’m used to. When I was 11 or so, the flared jeans were in and I definitely loved them. But then the skinny jean revolution took over and I never looked back. Until now, obviously, cue the baggy jeans style!
This trend is all over social media right now as people reminisce back to their 90s days and style the baggy jeans with cute heels, trainers, crop tops, bandanas, and all the pretty accessories. As a petite woman, styling the baggy jeans style, or any baggy clothing for that matter is quite challenging. But I’ve been experimenting and enjoying the styling process. So naturally, I wanted to share this. A big part of my inspiration for this trend came from my housemate, Dom, who rocked this style from the day we met! She really showed me that I could pull it off, so I couldn’t not mention that!
Own it
The most important thing I’ve learnt as I continue to come out of my “style shell” is to 100% own what you’re wearing. I mention this first because I think it’s important, especially when you’re branching out and trying new things. Moving to London has opened up a whole new world of fashion and style to me and it’s crazy to think how my style has evolved over the last year! I’m small and short, so if you told me a year ago that I’d be able to pull off baggy jeans, I probably would’ve laughed in your face. That’s the beauty of fashion though, you never know until you try, and once you do you may be extremely surprised.
Keep it simple
I must admit, I was nervous to try baggy jeans because I really believed that I’d drown in them. If you get the wrong size or style, that could obviously be the case though. I chose a style that I found in the H&M petite range (always look out for this filter and the size filter online!) It took me a few occasions to understand how to style the baggy look to suit my petite frame, but eventually, I got it.
Keeping it simple is key. I usually pair my baggy jeans with a simple white t-shirt and white sneakers, to create a nice flow. Generally, I’ll keep the top more fitted, to balance out the baggier bottoms. In these pictures, I’m wearing a slightly fitted/slightly slouchy jersey, which worked really well.
High-waist all the way
A useful tip would be to go for a high-waisted pair because that will help make your legs look longer. I know that low-rise jeans are making a comeback too (maybe I’ll hop on that train in the future…) but incorporating this style with the baggy fit too will make your legs look short and stubby (at least, that’s what I’ve experienced). High-waisted pants in general are great for creating the illusion of long legs – perfect for us shorties
Add Some Height
This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the high-waisted tip.
I don’t have any tall genes in me, so finding alternative ways to add height is key. That’s not to say you can’t wear baggy jeans with flats – rather, this is my personal preference when it comes to styling.
I typically wear these jeans with my favourite pair of Bershka sneakers, which have an amazing platform. I love this style because it’s super casual, but you still get that feeling of being “tall” without struggling in heels! The added height once again helps to make your legs appear longer, which definitely helps in styling the baggy look!
Wear Them With Confidence
My last point is to have confidence in how you style your baggy jeans. When I wear mine I feel so cool (even if I’m more uncool than cool ) But I really just feel like I’m truly having fun and being playful with my style, which is what fashion is all about, really. I never thought I’d be “gangsta” enough to pull off baggy jeans but you can surprise yourself when you veer off into the unknown (maybe a little deep for a pair of jeans, but you get it!)
