Oh, Sunday… The one day of the week most people love. The day most families share meals together and laughs around the table. Sunday’s in our household begin pretty much like every other day. With us all slowly and sleepily making our way into the lounge one by one. Awake enough to make some tea, but sleepy enough still to mumble over words and glare at those who appear bright eyed and bushy tailed! (that’s probably just me – I am not a morning person!) Okay, so I’m not really THAT bad, but only once properly awake, am I happy to actually begin processing what day it is and chat to the family about what the day’s plans entail…
Because of the extremely large quantity of dogs in our family, most Sunday’s consist of taking them for walks around our house. I love this purely because of the excitement it brings them. All we have to do is pick up a leash and we’ve immediately got many wagging tails and some high pitched howls surrounding us! This makes me so happy, you cannot believe. We have also recently added a new addition to our doggie family: my new puppy Biscotti! She is the sweetest, tiniest Maltese and on this particular day was her first walk. She LOVED it.
I promise this isn’t a whole post about walking my pups – though I wouldn’t put it past me! But no, not today. I’m actually here to share with you where we land up as a kind of ‘pit stop’, before walking back home. And this is the place we’ve crowned as having the best Belgian waffles in Joburg. That’s right!
GG’s Cafe is situated right outside the estate we stay in. It’s about a 20 minute walk, so it’s the perfect excuse and everyone wins! The dogs are beyond ecstatic, running through the grass and barking at every other possible dog we pass. Us humans are ecstatic too because we’re exercising, but then treating ourselves to these yummy waffles. Life is all about balance? GG’s is a very simple restaurant. It’s run by an amazing couple who live by life’s simple pleasures of nature, animals and friendships. It’s the most animal friendly environment, with bowls of water being served to the dogs on arrival. Nothing beats that! It’s such a lovely atmosphere there. What’s also unique is that they run a secondhand bookstore inside the cafe as well. What’s a better combination than books, tea and waffles? Honestly nothing!
There is of course more to the menu than waffles with cream and strawberries. But we don’t really experiment with anything else! You get your usual eggs and bacon and whatnot. And you can also change the strawberries for blueberries and the cream for ice cream. You might be wondering why we’ve decided that these are the best waffles – and I don’t blame you. Aren’t waffles waffles? However, my step-dad being Belgian knows a thing or two about Belgian waffles. And according to him, these meet all the criteria! They’re super light, which in my mind makes it so much more enjoyable. It’s so sad when you get a waffle that is so heavy and dense, and after four bites you’re full. They are also not shy with their amount of strawberries and this is amazing! Don’t you find it disappointing when you get like three strawberries with your order? You can only take a couple of bites with the combination! At GG’s though, this was probably the first thing I noticed and appreciated so much. I realise it’s a tiny thing to stress over, but strawberries make the whole meal! I’m not Belgian obviously, but I am quite a pro too when it comes to dessert in general. So I think between the two of us, you’ve got a pretty high chance of thinking the same.
The next time you’re looking for a Sunday breakfast/brunch spot, GG’s Cafe should be high up on your list! But even more so if you’re an animal lover. And I don’t say this lightly – we’ve even taken our pony with us! I think this might have distracted people from the waffles, but that’s what I love about this place: something like that is far from becoming a problem, and everyone embraces it all. You get to enjoy your tea, while surrounded by beautiful flowers and nature, watching your dogs have an absolute ball running around with the other dogs, and of course, spending your Sunday the right way: with those who are dearest to you.
Do you have any Sunday activities that you love to do with your family?
