Before I studied make-up I always used to wonder if wearing make-up everyday (or most days even) could be the cause of bad skin. After studying I learnt that majority of the time that answer is no. There are the few exceptions though, as with everything. If you have an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the make-up then of course there’s a high chance it could cause you to break out. Or if you leave your make-up on throughout the day and then sleep with it still perfectly applied, that’s in no way good for your skin! Chances are that’s going to break you out as well.

So as you can see, in most cases it’s unlikely that the actual wearing of make-up would cause you to have bad skin – it all depends on how you wear it, how you remove it and also knowing what your skin likes and dislikes. This brings me to my Summer Make-Up Tips – because just like in winter your skin needs special care during those dry months, and the hot summer months are no different when it comes to the skin needing attention! This post is going to focus on skin (if you hadn’t already guessed it!) and what you can do to help with the appearance of your make-up, as well as the longevity.

Hydrating the skin

It’s probably easy to predict that the first and most important aspect of skin care is hydration. The amount of water you drink in a day is going to reflect on the appearance of your skin. Dehydrated skin is going to appear flaky, feel tight and possibly show fine lines in certain areas. The secret to any flawless make-up application is good skin. Make-up cannot cover things such as fine lines and flakes! Believe me I know – I have struggled with dehydrated skin! It becomes so disheartening when you’re really trying to achieve a stunning look, but your skin is just not letting you.

During the hot summer, it’s even more vital to drink water because your skin loses much of its hydration through sweat (as gross as that may sound). Once hydrated skin is achieved and you can see a difference, applying make-up becomes so much easier! And the thing is, what’s going on inside your body can be seen on the skin, making it even more important to treasure your health.

Eating your fruit and veggies

Again, a pretty predictable one, but sometimes people can forget how important it is. Personally I have to force myself sometimes to eat fruit, otherwise I’d just consume all the donuts possible! But you see, that would be cruel to my skin. There’s all sorts of vitamins and goodness that comes from fruit and vegetables, which is a huge positive for healthy, natural glowing skin.

These first two tips really emphasise how important taking care of your insides is, in order for the outside to look good. I was recently asked if putting on highlighter and contouring would break a person out – exactly what I originally wondered. But honestly, once you have the basics down, wearing make-up does not have to be a fear!

Workout a good skincare routine

Now that the insides have been taken care of, you can start working on the exterior for some extra help. A good skincare routine is also extremely important in keeping your skin clear and soft. Using a cleanser in the morning and evening, followed by a toner and then a good moisturiser. Everyone’s skin is different though, and we all react differently to certain things. For my skin, using a milky cleanser is a lot better than using a soapy one. The soapy ones seem to dry out my skin even more and create a very tight feeling. I find a milky, creamier kind more gentle on my skin. It’s all about trying different products and finding what suits you best.

Toner is an extra that you can use. It basically wipes away leftover dirt in the smallest spaces on our skin. All of this comes after taking off your make-up!!! Please never, ever go to sleep with your make-up on. A day old make-up application sinks into the skin, especially when you’re sleeping, and is really a big NO if you’re trying to look after yours!

What is also a good idea is to exfoliate once a week and try to use face masks once or twice a week as well. Exfoliating is great for getting rid of dead skin cells, leaving the skin appearing brighter. These steps are just as important during summer. Our sweat needs to be washed away instead of remaining on the skin.

Apply sunscreen everyday

My last summer make-up tip is to remember to apply sunscreen, whether you plan on spending the day outside or not – it’s good to just always have some protection on your face. It’s not a secret that the sun is incredibly harsh, and there’s some very harmful results that can come from too much exposure. Your skin deserves to be protected, not only for the scary consequences, but also to maintain that smooth surface that we’re all striving so hard to achieve!

If you have ever wondered if make-up can be damaging or anything along those lines, I hope I’ve managed to answer those for you! Make-up is not something that needs to be avoided in the hopes of keeping your skin clear. It requires a mixture of your diet, exercise, mental/physical health, skincare routine and sun protection to all work together in order to keep your skin looking flawless. Another thing I need to mention is that while you are wearing make-up your skin is going to absorb it regardless of everything, and this is one reason why I am trying my best to use cruelty-free and organic products where I can (not everything I use is cruelty-free/organic). If my skin is going to absorb ingredients, I want them to be as safe as possible!
