“Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.” – Ralph Lauren
Mr. Lauren (that sounds really strange!) made quite a bit of sense when he made this quote. It’s a little hard to wrap your head around at first though. When thinking of style, I immediately obviously picture fashion, runways, what’s trending and who’s wearing what. But once you dive a bit deeper, it’s very clear that style and fashion are two completely different things. And I think that’s pretty fascinating.
I have been absolutely obsessed with clothing since I can remember. My mom used to have such a hard time with me because I would turn my room upside down, changing into four or five different outfits throughout the day. Take note that I must’ve been about four years old here. Indeed, it started early!
Since those days of throwing my clothes all over the floor, I would say that my style has evolved and I find myself feeling more confident in items that I wouldn’t have thought a while ago.
And I suppose it’s different for everyone – we all find our personal style at different times or because of different circumstances. But that’s what I find interesting, whether you try and copy someone’s look or start a trend of your own, it will always look completely unique to your own character.
I’ve always been a big fan of black, as most of us are. It’s just a very chic option for clothing of every style and makes anyone look good. But lately I have become a huge lover of colour. I’m not too sure if that has anything to do with my purple hair or what, but it happened. I’ve been obsessed with my dusty pink coat from Only, my bright coral, little zip bag, my olive green off-the-shoulder top and obviously this luminous orange wall! It’s just incredible… And during this very colourful phase of my life, I have really been having a lot of fun with choosing different clothes to wear and stepping out of my comfort zone of “all black”.
To me, this is what style is about. It’s got to do with trying new things that suddenly become extremely fascinating to you, and moving away from your norm, in the hopes of growing your love for fashion and creativity through style.
There is always going to be a fashion trend to follow or a celebrity wearing something that gives us all heart eyes. And of course, it’s always fun to go along and try out these beautiful styles that we see on runways and in magazines. But in an effort to save our wallets, and our individuality, experimenting in ways that YOU think are adding to your own personal style, will be a lot more fun. It doesn’t need to be expensive, designer or anything of that sort. It’s really just got to make you feel good.
Don’t get me wrong, I love following what’s hot and trending, but if you ever feel like trying something different that’s not yet been broadcast all over Fashion TV, don’t let that stop you. Style is meant to be played with and constantly evolving. So do just that! Play with your style to your heart’s content. Turn heads, cause jaw drops and let people stare. Because at the end of the day, who really cares? It’s your style, and that’s all that matters!
What are your thoughts when it comes to style and experimenting with your own?
