When it comes to foundation, there are countless options to choose from. From full coverage to matte finishes, compact powders, tinted moisturisers – the list goes on! In saying this however, different skin types require different formulas. It’s always best to buy a foundation that is just like another step in your skincare routine, rather than a foundation that is going to irritate your skin further!

In this post I’m going to share the best foundation formulas for the three dominant skin types. And hopefully this will help on your next trip to the beauty counter!

  1. Normal Skin: If you have normal skin, then you definitely are one of the lucky few! With this skin type, any formula of foundation can be used. The amount of oil in the skin is balanced and the skin is hydrated nicely. People with this skin type can go for matte finishes, sheer finishes, BB creams, tinted moisturisers or even just a good, compact powder. So go wild and experiment with any foundation. Just always keep hydrated to maintain your normal skin type. Make Up Forever HD Foundation is absolutely beautiful, creating a matte finish, otherwise the Urban Decay Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation is so stunning. It gives such a glowing, youthful finish.
  2. Oily Skin: If your skin tends to appear more oily than anything else, you will want to stick to foundations that are water based. With this skin type it is best to stay away from formulas that contain oil, as you don’t want to be adding extra oil to your skin. A really good water based foundation is the Mac Studio Waterweight Foundation. This provides a really nice coverage, but doesn’t add unwanted oils. Make Up Forever’s Face & Body Liquid Foundation is also a really good option for oily skin. Otherwise, there’s a L’Oreal True Match Super-Blendable option that can be purchased at many Clicks or Dischem’s around South Africa.
  3. Dry Skin: For this skin type you are looking for oil based foundations (or water based ones) to add more oil and moisture into the dry skin. Cream or liquid foundations are good for this skin type, but stay away from matte finishes and powders. A powder foundation will just add to the dryness and will pull away any moisture that’s already in the skin. Mac’s Face & Body foundation is a water based one, which is good for dry skin. Other nice foundations to use with this skin type are Clinique Moisture Surge (a tinted moisturiser) or Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation Stick and Skin Foundation SPF.

There are so many amazing foundations out there. You just have to make sure you know your skin type before you go and spend money on a foundation that may not even work for you. I always find myself searching for foundations and end up drooling over NARS, Charlotte Tilbury, Bare Minerals, Kiko, and so many more international brands that have yet to come to South Africa. It really breaks my heart that we are still waiting… I mean come onnnnnnn! 🙁
